John M. Vitto is a parent, special educator, school psychologist, and author. He specializes in behavior management, prevention programs, solution-focused counseling, reality therapy, and con­flict resolution. In addition to his work in schools, he has worked in two psychiatric hospitals and in private practice. John is an adjunct instructor at Mount Union College.

E. Joseph Schneider has been in education for more than 30 years as an association executive, research manager, and communication director. He is Managing Partner of Leadership Develop­ment Resources, an educational consulting com­pany based in Arlington, Virginia. Concurrently, he also serves as executive secretary of the National Policy Board for Educational Administration, a coalition of ten national education associations concerned about educational leadership.

Gail L. Sunderman is a senior research associate in K–12 Education for the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. Her research focuses on educational policy and politics, and urban school reform, including the development and implementation of education policy and the impact of policy on the educational opportunities for at-risk students.

Gary Orfield is Professor of Education and Social Policy at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Professor Orfield is interested in the study of civil rights, education policy, urban policy, and minority opportunity. He is Co-Founder and Director of the Civil Rights Project at Harvard, an initiative that is developing and publishing a new generation of research on multiracial civil rights issues.

Lara L. Hollenczer, the mother of two public school youngsters, is heavily involved in local educational issues as a parent, community activist, and local business owner. Professionally, she made her mark by helping law firms har­ness the capacity of the Internet for “branding” their firms, conducting market research, and developing new clients.

Dr. Bradley Balch is currently the Chairperson for the Department of Educational Leadership, Administration, and Foundations at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. Formerly, Dr. Balch served as a teacher, building administrator, and superintendent. In addition to his current capacity as a school board president, Dr. Balch also serves as a facilitator and consultant to school boards on leadership and governance issues.
